Patrick Cogan

2nd Lt. Patrick Cogan, 1st Regiment, New Hampshire Continental Line

Patrick Cogan was most likely born in Ireland and immigrated to New Hampshire before the American Revolution. Patrick was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 5th Continental Infantry on August 14, 1776. On the rolls his residence is listed as Durham, New Hampshire.

            On November 8, 1776, Second Lieutenant Cogan was selected as the Quartermaster for the 1st Regiment, New Hampshire Continental Line. For these additional duties, he drew extra pay at a rate of $27.50 per month.

            During the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge, Second Lieutenant Cogan is listed as the Quartermaster for the 1st New Hampshire and appears on the rolls with the Regimental Staff. He is further marked as “Present” from December 1777 to June 1778.

            On the August 1778 Muster Roll for the 1st New Hampshire’s Regimental Staff, Quartermaster Patrick Cogan is listed as having died on August 21, 1778.
