Surgeon’s Mate Jonathan Poole,1st Regiment New Hampshire Continental Line

Jonathan Pool was born September 5, 1758 in Woburn, Massachusetts. He was the son of Eleazar and Mary (Carter) Pool.

In 1777, at the age of 19, he was a student of Doctor John Hale. Dr. Hale was appointed the Surgeon for the 1st New Hampshire, Continental Line, on April 2, 1777 and by his influence Jonathan received the appointment as Surgeon’s Mate under him. At the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge, he is listed with the Regimental Staff and is marked “Present” for January-May 1778 and “On Command” for June 1778. He served as Surgeon’s Mate in the 1st New Hampshire, Continental Line for over three years and resigned on June 4, 1780.

After his time in the 1st New Hampshire, he made Hollis, New Hampshire his home and commenced a successful practice. He died at the young age of 38 on July 25, 1797.
