James Crombie

1st Lt. James Crombie, 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Continental Line

James Crombie was born around 1737 in Andover, Massachusetts.

James Crombie was a member of a Company of Minute-Men in April, 1775. Thereafter he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in Captain Smith’s Company of Baldwin’s Militia Regiment from September 20, 1776 – November 8, 1776. On November 8, 1776, James Crombie was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in Captain Samuel Blodgett’s Company of the 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Continental Line.

During the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge, James Crombie is listed as First Lieutenant in Captain Samuel Blodgett’s 2nd Company of the 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Continental Line. He is further marked as “Sick/On Furlough” in December 1777 and “On Furlough in New Hampshire by order of General Poor” for all returns from 1778. While the December 1777 roll says “sick,” First Lieutenant Crombie was in fact severely injured when he “ruptured his groin, being thrown from his horse while on duty, shortly after the evacuation from Ticonderoga.”

First Lieutenant James Crombie was placed on half-pay on September 1, 1778. This half-pay continued till March 20, 1782 according to a list published by the New Hampshire Committee of Claims signed by John Taylor Gilman.

First Lieutenant James Crombie died October 7, 1802.
